Korčula
Our journey through Croatia in 2021 concluded with an extraordinary destination – the island of Korčula, which completely captivated us. We reached it by ferry from the Pelješac Peninsula, and our first impressions promised unforgettable moments. The island enchanted us so much that we decided to spend an entire seven days there, enjoying both its charm and tranquility.
Korčula – The Pearl of Dalmatia
Korčula, often referred to as the “Little Dubrovnik,” is a place that can enchant anyone. At first glance, its medieval old town, surrounded by defensive walls, captures attention with its narrow streets laid out in the distinctive shape of a fishbone. Strolling through these charming corners, we discovered picturesque white stone houses, flower-adorned balconies, and atmospheric alleyways.
A must-see during our visit was St. Mark’s Cathedral – a majestic structure with a beautiful tower offering breathtaking views of the surrounding islands and the azure sea. Korčula also boasts a rich history – it is said to be the birthplace of the famous explorer Marco Polo. His legacy can be explored in the local museum, which presents fascinating stories of his voyages.
We spent our evenings in small, family-run restaurants, savoring Dalmatian specialties and fresh seafood, enjoying the warm and inviting atmosphere of this extraordinary town.
Camping Mindel and Vela Luka beaches
After an intense period of sightseeing, we moved to the western part of the island, to a picturesque spot – Camping Mindel, located just beyond the town of Vela Luka. This magical corner at the end of the island, surrounded by wild nature, offered a serene retreat where we were awakened each day by the songs of birds and the soothing sound of waves.
The beaches in this area were nothing like those in popular resorts – they were wild, intimate, and framed by rocks and greenery. The small coves with crystal-clear water left the biggest impression on us, providing the perfect setting for snorkeling. In the evenings, we watched sunsets that painted the sky in shades of pink and orange, creating unforgettable memories.
An Unexpected Change of Plans
Our adventure on Korčula ended with a little surprise. On the day of our return, when we tried to buy tickets for the ferry from Vela Luka to Split, we discovered that there were no seats available. Although we were initially disappointed, we quickly decided to return via Orebić, which turned out to be a fantastic choice.
This change in plans allowed us to stop in Ston for lunch and try exquisite mussels at a local tavern, savoring their incredible taste. This unexpected detour added a special charm to our journey. Ultimately, full of impressions and with our heads brimming with memories, we returned to Kraków, already planning our next holiday adventures.
