Mostar

Mostar

Our summer trip through Dalmatia reached a unique high point with a one-day visit to Mostar, one of the hottest places we visited that summer! The August sun was blazing, but nothing could stop us from exploring this Herzegovinian gem. Mostar, with its distinctive stone streets and majestic Old Bridge, immediately captivated us with its atmosphere.

Strolling through the old town, we immersed ourselves in a rich blend of historical and cultural influences visible at every turn – from Ottoman motifs to traces of the Austro-Hungarian era. We stopped by the city bazaars, where vendors offered everything from handmade souvenirs to colorful textiles and ceramics. Every stall and corner told the story of a city that for centuries has been a crossroads of cultures.

Yet, the most moving part of our visit was seeing the remnants of the recent war. Walking through the streets, we noticed buildings damaged during the conflicts of the ’90s, some still bearing bullet holes and shrapnel marks, a stark reminder of Mostar’s dramatic past. These contrasts – between the charm of historic landmarks and the lingering signs of hardship – added depth to our journey and left a lasting impression.

After such a hot day, we had to find a way to cool down – and the Kravica waterfalls were just the answer! The icy water of the lakes near the falls instantly revived us, and a swim surrounded by lush greenery was the perfect end to a day full of experiences. That refreshing moment after Mostar’s heat was like the vacation reset we needed before continuing our Balkan adventure.
